Trees
planting a tree helps the air right? well not always as much as you think. apparently some trees actually make some pollutants and don't sequester as much carbon (remove CO2) as others. check out the article at chemistry.org.
i know lots of bad trees that are bad not because of the air or what they do to the air but just because of roots and water lines, messiness, and weakness, like, catalpas, silver maples, chinese elms, locust with thorns, yeah....
from the actual journal article the news article was based on, "Of the 30 species considered, pine, larch, and silver birch have the greatest potential to improve urban air quality, while oaks, willows, and poplars can worsen downwind air quality if planted in very large numbers." kinda a specific list for future planning.

WILLOW. I have no idea what it does to the air, but it leaves limbs and leaves all over the yard at all times of the year. now thats a junky tree!

locusts with thorns... that must be what our one tree is. its super pretty but I cringe every time the kitty looks at it.
